| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description SAFE SAND IS A FINE, WHITE PLAYSAND WITHOUT FREE CRYSTALLINE SILICA DUST. IDEAL FOR SANDBOXES AND SAND TABLES.
The Safe Sand Company provides an alternative to unsafe children's playsand -- delivered. The State of California requires a cancer warning label on bags of sand containing crystalline silica. That is because most of the sand found in hardware stores is not natural sand, but actually derived from quarried quartz rocks. The dust from such sand is regulated by the EPA (Environmental Protections Agency) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and known to cause fatal lung conditions. The Safe Sand Company is dedicated to the purpose of informing the public and distributing a safe, non-hazardous playsand for children, parents, child care professionals and educators everywhere.
ECO CONSUMER TIP! Shipping heavy sand costs money and fuel. Shipping is the bulk of the price you pay for delivered sand. Although the most common sand sold in hardware stores is crystalline silica, you might find a washed pea gravel or other safe alternative. Like the variation in salt (pink Himalayan, sea salt, etc.), sand from different mines contains different elements in their sand and dust. Ask your local supplier, FIRST, for their MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheet) report. Look for the label: "Not labeled for sale in California." You have a right to know if someone is selling you a known carcinogen and the EPA and OSHA have done great work in protecting workers from inhaling certain kinds of dusts: eg. crystalline silica. Most sand sellers have a MSDS online so you can check and see. Even if sand is labeled "playsand" the actual contents may vary by location. Ask your local supplier for a MSDS, it may save you and the environment tons of shipping costs!
Check our website for a sand calculator to estimate your sand quantity based on the size of your sandbox and desire depth. To read more about crystalline silica visit OSHA or EPA online.
